Montgomery County's unemployment rate fell to 3% in June, making it the fourth-lowest among Pennsylvania's 67 counties and signaling a tight labor market for employers along Ridge Pike, Germantown Pike, and the Blue Bell office parks.

The data, released Wednesday, July 29 by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry and reported by The Reporter, shows the county's rate dropped half a percentage point from May and four-tenths of a point from June 2025, when it stood at 3.4%.

A 3% rate marks a tight labor market. Local restaurants, retailers, and office tenants face stiffer competition for workers and upward pressure on wages.

Regional job growth

Across the broader Philadelphia metropolitan area, nonfarm jobs reached 3,142,900 in June. That's an increase of 12,900 jobs compared to June 2025 and 3,500 more than May.

The metro area's overall unemployment rate was 4.3%, down three-tenths of a point year-over-year.

Chester County posted the region's lowest rate at 2.8%. Delaware County came in at 3.6%.

A wrinkle for office parks

Not every sector gained.

Statewide, professional and business services, the category that includes many Blue Bell office park tenants such as SEI, Boomi, Vertex, and Qlik, posted the largest job losses of any industry supersector in June. That decline came even as Pennsylvania's total nonfarm employment hit a record 6,209,600.

Pennsylvania's statewide unemployment rate was 4.1% in June, one-tenth of a point below the national rate of 4.2%. It marked the 33rd consecutive month the state's rate was at or below the U.S. average.

Workforce strategy in play

The tight numbers come as Montgomery County invests in workforce development. At the May 4 launch of the Greater Philadelphia Growth Partnership, MontcoWorks Executive Director Jennifer Butler said the initiative aims to "align training and support systems with the industries driving growth, so employers have the talent they need and residents have clearer pathways to quality jobs."

The county's employer base spans enterprise technology, precision manufacturing firms like Teledyne Judson Technologies and SPS Technologies, and life sciences companies including Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Globus Medical, according to a county press release on the partnership.
