Whitemarsh Township residents can get a behind-the-scenes look at their police department this fall through a free seven-week program covering SWAT operations, K-9 units, criminal investigations and more.

The Whitemarsh Township Police Department is accepting applications for its 2026 Citizens Police Academy, which runs Monday evenings from Sept. 28 through Nov. 9, according to the department's announcement. Sessions meet from 6 to 8 p.m. at the police department, 616 Germantown Pike, Lafayette Hill.

The program, led by Chief Christopher Ward's department, gives participants a working knowledge of how the township's police force operates. Topics span patrol operations, criminal investigations, firearms and use of force, SWAT, K-9, traffic safety, DUI enforcement and specialty units.

Now in its second year, the academy starts an hour earlier than the 2025 edition, which ran from 7 to 9 p.m. The shift to a 6 p.m. start may make it easier for residents coming straight from work.

Who can apply

Applicants must be Whitemarsh Township residents, at least 18 years old and hold a valid driver's license. A background check may be required.

There is no cost to attend.

The department is urging interested residents to apply early, as space may be limited. No application deadline has been announced.
