Residents in Whitemarsh, Plymouth and Whitpain townships can drop off unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications at their local police departments Saturday, Oct. 24, during Montgomery County's Drug Take Back Day.
The three local collection sites, open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., are:
- Whitemarsh Township Police Department, 616 E. Germantown Pike, Lafayette Hill
- Plymouth Township Police Department, 700 Belvoir Rd., Plymouth Meeting
- Whitpain Township Police Department, 960 Wentz Rd., Blue Bell
They are among 41 locations countywide staffed by police officers for the four-hour event, according to District Attorney Kevin Steele and Lower Providence Township Police Chief Michael Jackson, president of the Montgomery County Police Chiefs Association. Additional drop-off sites may still be added.
Accepted items include tablets, capsules, inhalers, creams, ointments, nasal sprays, pet medicines and vaping products with the battery removed. Needles, liquid medications and intravenous or injectable solutions will not be accepted.
The program has collected more than 147,500 pounds of medications since it began in 2010, according to the district attorney's office. Collection sites took in 6,532 pounds in October 2025, The Reporter reported. An April collection brought in 3,067 pounds, a figure Steele called "not very high."
The event comes as overdose deaths remain a concern across Montgomery County. Steele told county commissioners on Oct. 5 that 66 overdose deaths had been reported in the county as of early October, compared with 81 during the first half of 2025.
"When we talk about numbers, these are lives," Steele said at the Oct. 5 commissioners meeting. "These are lives that have been lost … and we hope this year will be less, but one is too many."
Residents who cannot make the Oct. 24 event can use one of more than 50 permanent prescription drug disposal boxes at police departments year-round. A full list is available on the district attorney's website at montgomerycountypa.gov/DA.
The countywide list also includes four grocery store locations staffed by police, including Wegmans in North Wales and Collegeville and Giant stores in Willow Grove and Stowe.
