Whitemarsh Elementary School is inviting veterans to visit classrooms on Veterans Day for its annual "Take a Vet to School Day."
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Plymouth Meeting school, which is part of the Colonial School District. Veterans who have a connection to a current WES student, whether family members or friends, are eligible to attend and share their experiences in the armed forces.
Families must complete a Google Form by Friday, Oct. 23, to register a veteran for the in-person celebration. The form is available on the school's announcement page.
Wall of Heroes
The school is also building a "Wall of Heroes" display for its lobby. Families can honor veterans who cannot attend in person, whether living or deceased, by submitting their information through the same Google Form. That submission is also due Oct. 23.
The school said in its announcement that the program aims to show veterans how much the community values their service while inspiring WES students.
Past Veterans Day events at WES
The Nov. 11 program builds on a tradition at Whitemarsh Elementary. In 2024, the school held an assembly where students introduced veterans important to their lives, sang patriotic songs and invited service members to stay for lunch. In 2021, second-graders connected with veterans by Zoom, and families submitted photos that were compiled into a slideshow shown on Veterans Day.
Other Colonial School District schools have also marked the holiday in past years. In 2024, Conshohocken Elementary hosted a veterans breakfast with songs and photos. Plymouth Elementary displayed flags along Plymouth Road with student-written tags naming veterans. Ridge Park Elementary held its own assembly.
Families who want to register a veteran or submit a Wall of Heroes entry can visit the Whitemarsh Elementary announcements page before the Oct. 23 deadline.
