Montgomery County's unemployment rate dropped to 2.7% in July, the fourth-lowest among Pennsylvania's 67 counties, according to state data released Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The figure, reported by the Times Herald from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, marks a decline from 3% in June and down six-tenths of a percentage point from July 2025. Montgomery County tied with Mifflin County for the fourth-lowest rate statewide.

The county's rate sits well below the statewide figure of 3.9% and the national rate of 4.1%.

Pennsylvania's 3.9% rate in July was the first time the state dipped below 4% since October 2024. The state's rate has been at or below the national average for 34 consecutive months, the Department of Labor & Industry said in a release.

Neighboring Chester County posted the second-lowest rate in the state at 2.5%, tied with Cumberland County. Delaware County came in at 3.3%, ranking 23rd.

Across the broader Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro area, the unemployment rate was 4.1% in July, down from 4.6% in July 2025. Total nonfarm jobs in the metro area hit 3,133,200 in July, up 4,500 from July 2025 but down 5,600 from June.

Statewide, total nonfarm jobs fell 7,600 from June to 6,201,100 in July. Leisure and hospitality posted the largest gain, reaching a record high. Education and health services saw the steepest decline.

The Department of Labor & Industry will release August statewide unemployment data on Sept. 18. County-level data for August is scheduled for Sept. 29.
