Seventh- and eighth-graders at Colonial Middle School won't need to set an early alarm on the first day of school. They report at noon.
The school announced Monday, Aug. 17 that it will use a staggered schedule on Monday, Aug. 31, giving incoming sixth-graders the building to themselves for the morning. Sixth-graders arrive at their regular start time; seventh- and eighth-graders report only for their Core 1 class beginning at 12 p.m.
The goal: let the newest middle schoolers acclimate before the hallways fill up.
What 7th and 8th grade families need to know
- Buses run four hours later than normal. Seventh- and eighth-grade buses will pick students up four hours after their regular scheduled time on Aug. 31.
- Students should eat lunch before arriving, according to the school's announcement.
- Only Core 1 is on the schedule. The district has not specified a dismissal time for seventh- and eighth-graders.
Sixth-graders get a head start
Sixth-graders report at the regular time and spend the morning navigating their new school before upperclassmen arrive. Many incoming sixth-graders already got a preview at the district's Move-Up Camp, which held sessions on Monday, July 27 and Monday, Aug. 17 at Colonial Middle School. Staff members Mrs. Koenig and Mr. Lashley coordinated the camp, which ran from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Open houses follow the first week
The district calendar lists the CMS 6th Grade Open House on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and the 7th and 8th Grade Open House on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Immunization reminder for 7th graders
As we reported Aug. 11, seventh-graders need Tdap and MCV4 immunization records submitted to the school nurse by Aug. 31. Documentation can go through the SNAP portal or be emailed to [email protected].
