Plymouth Whitemarsh High School boys basketball coach Jim Donofrio has been named Pennsylvania’s 2025–26 Boys Basketball Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, according to Colonial School District’s announcement.

The honor recognizes Donofrio at the state level. The district says his Colonials won the 2026 District 1 Class 6A championship and reached the state quarterfinals.

A Plymouth Whitemarsh graduate, Donofrio began coaching the school’s junior varsity team in 1992 under Al Angelos and became head coach in 1998. He has taught English at the high school since 2004.

His career includes more than 500 victories and the 2010 PIAA Class 4A state championship. He entered the Montgomery County Coaches Hall of Fame in 2017 and was recognized among Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Distinguished Graduates in 2011.

The district’s tribute also describes his emphasis on encouragement and lasting relationships with players. Before practices and games, he shares a quotation on a card along with a red Starburst candy. Former players Michael Pereira and Mani Sajid credited his influence beyond basketball.

Athletic Director RJ Bretz and Principal Jason Bacani surprised Donofrio with the award at school.
