Plymouth Meeting preschoolers become junior journalists for a day

Preschoolers at The Goddard School of Plymouth Meeting will trade building blocks for microphones Monday, Sept. 28, when the classroom becomes a newsroom for World News Day.

The event runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 3025 Walton Road. It is part of a nationwide celebration across nearly 700 Goddard School locations, according to the school's event announcement. Students ranging in age from 6 weeks to 6 years will rotate through three stations that channel their curiosity into journalism-style activities.

At a media art collage station, children will create a collage using newspaper and pictures, forming them into a word or design to be displayed throughout the building. Older students will try their hand at weather reporting.

The centerpiece: a "breaking news" investigation in which children follow mysterious footprints tracked through the school's hallways.

Children can also record morning reports at the "Plymouth Meeting Action News Station." The school has invited local news anchors and journalists to visit during the event. Teachers and school directors will oversee all sessions.

World News Day is a global campaign founded by the Canadian Journalism Foundation in 2018. The 2026 campaign runs Sept. 25 through Oct. 1, with Sept. 28 as the focal day, coinciding with the UN International Day for Universal Access to Information. More than 1,000 news organizations across 100 countries are participating.

The Goddard School said the event connects to its inquiry-based Wonder of Learning curriculum, which encourages children to investigate ideas and learn through hands-on exploration. The Goddard School introduced the program in August 2024.

No admission fee or fundraising is involved. Parents can follow the event on the school's Instagram and Facebook accounts.
