A fire in a second-floor laundry room forced the evacuation of a three-story apartment building on the 400 block of Ridge Pike in Whitemarsh Township early Monday, injuring one firefighter and sending all residents into the night.

Everyone in the building got out safely.

The firefighter was treated on scene, according to a report from Patch.

Police were first to arrive shortly after midnight and found light smoke coming from the building's exterior, the Patch report said. Once inside, firefighters encountered heavy smoke filling the interior of one apartment.

After completing the evacuation, crews traced the source to a second-floor laundry room and extinguished the fire quickly.

Three fire companies responded

Barren Hill Volunteer Fire Company, Harmonville Fire Company No. 1, and Plymouth Fire Company No. 1 all responded to the call, according to posts from the companies on Facebook and Instagram on Monday, July 27.

Barren Hill posted on Facebook that its members were alerted to the structure fire shortly after midnight and that police began evacuating residents upon arrival. The company confirmed the fire was located in a second-floor laundry room and was quickly knocked down.

Harmonville Fire Company No. 1, which serves Plymouth Township and surrounding communities, posted identical language about the response on its own Facebook page.

Investigation underway

The Whitemarsh Township Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire. As of Monday afternoon, the cause remains unknown, and no timeline for the investigation has been announced.

The number of residents evacuated from the building has not been disclosed.
